John L. Bumgarner, 80, of Norman died Monday, Jan. 20, in Norman. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Cal Brannon officiating. Burial will follow at the Norman IOOF Cemetery. Havenbrook Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Mr. Bumgarner was born Jan. 29, 1922, in Norman, to John Lee and Leona Stogner Bumgarner. He grew up in Norman and graduated from Norman High School. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelorís degree in history and received a masterís degree in education administration from OU. He married Sadie Margaret Covington Feb. 15, 1946. He served in the Air Force during World War II. He started teaching at Pleasant Grove Schools near Seminole for one year and returned to Norman. He was principal at McKinley Elementary School for a number of years and was principal for 12 years at West Junior High School. He then returned to McKinley and was principal until his retirement in May 1982. He was a charter member of the Norman Sooner Lions and member of the Oklahoma Education Association and the National Education Association. He was a member of McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, serving as the chairman of the Board of Directors of the kindergarten. He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid OU fan.
Mr. Bumgarner was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Betty Lou Chase and Helen Kammerlocher.
Mr. Bumgarner is survived by his wife, Sadie of the home; daughters, Mary June Joseph and husband, Joe, of Satellite Beach, Fla., and Linda Lippe and husband, Dennis, of Austin, Texas; sister, Mary Ann Jahnke and husband, H.R., of Henderson, Nev.; brothers, Robert Bumgarner and wife, Sharon, of Phoenix and Phillip Bumgarner and wife, Cathey, of Bradenton, Fla.; and grandsons, Joseph Joseph III and Aaron John, Tyler Joseph and Calvin James Lippe.
