Laverne A. Anderson, 90, of Durant, died Thursday, Oct.19 at the Medical
Center of Southeastern Oklahoma, Durant. Services will be at 10 a.m.
Saturday, Oct. 21 at First Christian Church with the Rev. Jim Hodson
officiating. Burial is at Resthaven Cemetery in Oklahoma City, with her
grandsons as pallbearers. Services are under the direction of Dalton-Holmes
Funeral Home, Durant.
Mrs. Anderson was born Dec. 3, 1909, in Perkins, to Christopher Godip
Roof and Ross Florence (Skinner). She graduated from Tyron High School
in 1927, and received a lifetime teaching certificate from Oklahoma State
University in 1928.
She married fellow Tyron High School Graduate, Carl G. Anderson, on
Nov. 3, 1928, in Guthrie. The family moved to Duant in 1945. She
graduated with a bachelor of science degree in education from Southwestern
State College in 1954, and taught fifth grade at Lincoln Elementary School
in Norman until she retired and returned to Durant in 1980.
Mrs. Anderson had been a longtime active mmber of both the Norman
and Durant First Christian Churches, holding several offices. A member of
both Naomi and Mary Circles, she was an elder of the Church and often
taught Sunday school to children and adults.
Mrs. Anderson was skilled in writing. She wrote numerous original poems.
Many are familiar with her in-depth study and well-presented book reviews,
devotionals, and varied programs with the church, community, and clubs
for several decades. In addition, she enjoyed painting, gardening, and was
a skilled seamstress.
She belonged to numerous clubs and organizations in Durant, including
Delphia Club, Fortnightly, Delta Kappa Gamma, and Rose Garden Club.
Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son,
Carl Miner Anderson, two sisters and three brothers.
Survivors include daughters, Glenna Wright, and husband, Gordon, of
Durant; Rosellen Carolan, and husband, Tony, of Plano, Texas; daughter-in-law,
Carol Anderson, of Oklahoma City; granddaughters, Michelle Reid, and
husband, Dave, of Gilbert, Ariz.; and Suzie Carolam, of Seattle; grandsons, David
Wright, and wife, Kathy, of Allen, Texas; Steve Wright, and wife, Pat, of
Bartlesville; Kevin Wright, and wife, Tina, of Oklahoma City; Cole Anderson
and wife, Suzanne, of Dallas; Chris Anderson, and wife, Kil Sun, of Italy,
and Jeff Taylor, of Dallas; great-grandchildren, Shelby and Mackenzie
Wright, of Bartlesville, Nicholas and Caroline Anderson, of Dallas, Dawn,
Eric and Rebecca Anderson, of Italy, Dana and Charlie Reid, of Gilbert,
Ariz.; and Heaven, Cody and Emy Taylor, of Ada.
The family has suggested the First Christian Church Memorial Fund, 301
N. 3rd, Durant, Ok. 74701, for memorial contributions.
