Sharing Memories of Orion M. Burkett
e-mail to Peggy Smith

I remember Mr. Burkett being the bus driver that would take us (Jr. Police) to summer camp. We would ride in a hot, slow school bus all the way down to the Wichita Mountain wildlife preserve (past Lawton) and stay at Camp Boulder. Mr. Burkett was a very nice, patient man, and was very tolerant, patient, and kind with a rowdy bunch of kids. He would put up with our shenanigans for a whole week at summer camp and always seemed to have a smile on his face.

I also remember him taking a large group of us to a pond near Noble one day. The pond was stocked with fish. I was using a bamboo pole and caught 18 to 20 fish. That was really fun, as most of my memories of fishing as a kid were long, boring events with no fish caught. Mr. Burkett was there, encouraging us and helping us land the fish and put them on a stringer. He really seemed to be a person who encouraged youngsters.

What a great person he was. I am glad to have known him.
