Alma Oceil Gatlin, 74, died at her home in Norman on Thursday,
July 23.
Services are planned for 10:30 a.m. Satruday in Mayes Chapel of
Remembrance, with the Rev. George Martin officiating. Burial will be
in IOOF Cemetery, under the direction of Mayes Funeral Directors.
The daughter of Edmond Grant and Maggie Vasa Ellis Wooldridge,
she was born Aug. 5, 1917 at Vinson, where she graduated from high
school in 1935. She attended Oklahoma College for Women in
Chickasha in 1936, later graduating from Southwestern University at
Weatherford with a bachelor of science dregree in 1939--the same
year she married Charles E. Gatlin on Sept. 3. Mrs. Gatlin completed
her master of science degree at the University of Oklahoma in 1951.
Spanning 42 years, her career as an educator began in a one-room
school at the edge of the Salt Fork River in Vinson, where her teaching
duties included sweeping the floor, building the fire and drawing
water. She later held other positions at Duke, Fairview, Roosevelt,
Mountain View and Altus.
After moving to Norman in 1957, Mrs. Gatlin taught at Jackson
Elementary School for six years and later taught first grade classes at
Cleveland Elementary School for 17 years.
Mrs. Gatlin is survived by two sons, John E. of Norman and Larry
C. of Dosoto, Texas; and seven grandchildren, Casey Christine, Jennifer
Kay, Kandi Michelle, Brandon Paul, Richard Brett and her twin
grandsons, David Scott and Michael Ray.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edmond and Maggie; two
sisters, Hazel Loftin and Victor Jo Goodson; one brother, Wiston; and
four half-sisters, Jessie Chambers, Cora Stanton and Minnie and Rush
McCain.
The family has suggested American Cancer Society, Cleveland County
Unit, 2221 West Lindsey, Suite 212, Norman, 73069 as appropriate
for memorial contributions.
