Charles Edmond Gatlin, 86, of Norman, died Jan. 10 in Norman. Services
will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Primrose Chapel with the Rev. George
Martin officiating. Burial will be at Norman IOOF Cemetery, under the
direction of Primrose Funeral Service.
Mr. Gatlin was born at Commerce, Texas, Oct. 27, 1913 to John Henry
Gatlin and Laura Leona (Smith) Gatlin. He married Alma Oceil Wooldridge,
Sept. 3, 1939. His parents were early-day settlers in old Greer County. They
returned to east Texas to be near better medical care and then moved back
to Oklahoma soon after Mr. Gatlin's birth. After finishing High School at
Lone Wolf, he returned to that school and took a post-graduate year of
training in business. He received his bachelor of science degree from
Southwestern State college at Weatherford, with a major in education and
a minor in business. He taught 36 years in Oklahoma. He received his
master of education from the University of Oklahoma with a minor in
administration. When he was in high school in Lone Wolf, he owned
and operated a produce house. There the "gang" usually gathered for
checkers, capture the flag, dominoes, pitch, pranks and a few new jokes
sneaked in occasionally. He also was a silent part owner of a cafe in Hobart.
He was a member of Retired Teachers, Elementary and Secondary Principals,
American Association of Retired People, Classroom Teachers, Oklahoma
Education and National Education Association, Internation Fitness Center,
and a member of the McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church.
He taught Sunday school and assisted in many other civic activities.
Survivors include two sons, John Edmond Gatlin and his wife, Cathy Lou
Morehead Gatlin, and their four children, Casey, Jennifer, and twin sons,
David and Michael; Larry Charles Gatlin and his three children, Kandi,
Brandon Paul and Richard Brett.
