Effie Mae Huddleston, 89, of Norman, died Jan. 11 in Norman from
complications due to a stroke suffered on Dec. 26, 1999. Private
family interment at IOOF Cemetery will be Jan. 14 followed by a
memorial service for friends and family at 4 p.m. at St. Stephens United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Diane R. Kovacs officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Primrose Funeral Service.
Mrs. Huddleston was born on Feb. 18, 1910, to Della and Willie
Martin in Kildare and attended Kildare Elementary School, where she
rode five miles to school each day on the legendary "Kid Wagon"
pulled by horses. She attended Newkirk High, graduating in 1928.
She earned a B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of
Oklahoma. She taught 30 years in rural and Norman public schools,
retiring in 1971. She said a love of children led her to teaching. She
enjoyed music and sang in church choirs and taught piano lessons.
She taught Sunday school at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist
Church. She and her husband were charter members of St. Stephen's
United Methodist Church where she still had her membership.
She was preceded in death by her late husband of 53 years, Lonnie
D. Huddleston; her parents; three brothers, Frank, Don and Gerald
Martin; and a great-grandson, Gavin Yeary.
Survivors include her son, Robert Lonnie Huddleston and his wife,
Nan, of Ponca City; twins, Della Kay Williams and her husband, Gene
of Collinsville, Texas, and Davie Mae Griffing and her husband, Terry, of
Minneapolis, Minn.; a brother, Earl Martin and his wife, Barbara Jane, of
Yukon; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stephen's Music Generation
Ministry Scholarship Fund or to the Memorial Fund at St. Stpehen's
United Methodist Church.
