When Mrs. Huey made us sing, we would have to sing the first note of the song before the song would start: "LOOOOOO!" like they do on the Charlie Brown Christmas specials. Mrs. Huey would go down the line and inspect our fingernails, to see if they were clean. If they were, we got a nice rubber stamp inked on the back of our "Big Chief" tablets. If they were dirty, we got a smack on the back of the hand with a ruler. I didn't have very many stamps on the back of my Big Chief... I was digging ditches in my backyard for my army men.

Mrs. Huey made the whole class memorize the Christmas story from the Bible: Luke 2: verses 8 through 17. I can still recite that passage. We chanted it to our parents for the class Christmas party in 1958.

"And there were, in the same country, shepherds, abiding in the fields, keeping watch over their flocks by night... "
