Services for Mrs. Irene Harman Keen, Norman, will be at 2 p.m.
Monday at the Mayes Chapel of Remembrance with Dr. Milton
Smith of Sapulpa, assisted by the Rev. George Prentice, officiating.
Mrs. Keen died Friday at her residence.
Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery, Mayes Funeral Directors is
in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Keen was born in Stillwater, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Henry Harman. She was married to Paul Keen Aug, 16, 1920,
in Oklahoma City. The couple moved to Norman in 1927 from
Geary. He preceded her in death in 1982.
She was a graduate of the University of Oklahoma. She retired
in 1968, after having taught at Jefferson Elementary School for 17
years, and previously, for five years at Lincoln Elementary School.
She was active in various educational organizations, including the
National Education Association and the Norman Classroom Teachers
Association. She served as first president of the Norman CTA, vice
president of ths State CTA, president of the central district CTA, director
of the central district CTA, and state chairman of the resolutions
commission of the CTA from 1959 to 1960.
In addition, she was a delegate to the NEA convention eight times
and a delegate six times to the national CTA conference. She also
served on the Oklahoma Education Association board of directors
from 1960 to 1962 and on the first personnel policies commission of
the OEA, as well as serving two years on the OEA Legislative
Commission.
Mrs. Keen was also past president of of the Lincoln Elementary
and Norman High School PTA's and the Norman PTA council. She
had been a member of the resolutions commission (1958), state
chairman of the Donald Deshane Defense Fund (1959-60), and a
delegate to the Teacher Educations Professional Standards.
A past president of the Sorosis club, she was also a member of
Kappa Delta Pi and past president of Kappa Kappa Iota, of which
she was a charter member.
She had contributed professional articles to the OEA magazine,
as well as having written stories and poems whic were published
in Sunday school publications.
She was a member of the Writers and of the First Church of the
Nazarene. She had served as a Sunday school teacher for 20
years, a missionary president, Sunday school superintendent
and on the church board.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry of Norman, and Paul Jr. of
Fort Worth, Texas; and five grandchildren, Mrs. Phil (Cindy)
Brockhaus and Jay Keen, both of Norman, Chris Keen of Noble,
and Julie and Jana Keen, both of Fort Worth. A son, Donald Jay,
preceded her in death in 1979.
The family has designated the Irene Keen Memorial Fund at the
First Church of the Nazarene, 315 Alameda, as appropriate for
expressions of sympathy.
Friends may call at the funeral home for viewing until 1 p.m.
Monday.
Bearers will be Port Robertson, Leon Cross, Jim Agar, Steve Culp,
Harold Powell, Terry Foor, Phil Symcox, Don Symcox, Roger
Harrison and Richard Kunkel.
