Services for Mrs. Bernice Mathis Sims, a Norman public school teacher
since 1938, will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Mayes Chapel of Remembrance
with the Dr. William B. Oden, St. Stephen's United Methodist Church,
officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetary.
Mrs. Sims, 62, died Monday in Norman Municipal Hospital after an extended
illness. She was born Aug. 20, 1907, in Mineral Wells, Tex., and came to
Norman in 1937 from College Station, Tex. She was a graduate of North Texas
State University, Denton.
She taught at Jefferson Elementary school during 1938-41; McKinley School
1941-47; Lincoln School 1947-58 and at Washington School from 1958 until
she took a leave of absence last October. Her retirement became official
Monday.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Oklahoma Education
Association, the National Education Association and the Norman Association
of Classroom Teachers.
Survivors include her husband, Ellis M. Sims of the home at 104 Foreman,
and three sisters, Mrs. William T. Long, McAllen, Tex., ands Mrs. John L.
Collett and Mrs. C. J. Gilbert, both of Fort Worth.
The family has designated the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation
for research in cancer as appropriate for expressions of sympathy.
