Arhtur C. "Red" Smith, 91, died Tuesday, March 2, in Oklahoma City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Havenbrook Funeral Home Chapel
in Norman. Havenbrook Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Mr.Smith was born Aug. 31, 1912, in Mulhall, to Agnes and Ernest
Smith. He was an outstanding athelete and lettered in all sports before
graduating with honors from Coyle High School. He received a bachelor's
degree from what is now the University of Central Oklahoma and received
a master's degree from the University of Oklahoma. He married Juanita
Henderon in 1937. They taught in Hastings, Comanche, Terral and
Vinson before moving to Norman in 1955, Mr, Smith was a teacher at
Norman's Central Junior High School and then principal and coach at
Lincoln, Monroe and Washington elementary schools. He retired after
38 years of educational and coaching service. He was a 50-year member
of First Baptist Church of Norman and belonged to many organizations.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was an avid sports fan, especially
the University of Oklahoma Sooners, Family members want to thank the
owners and staff of Bellevue and Dr. John Devore for taking such
excellent care of Mr. Smith the previous six months.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and wife.
Mr. Smith is survived by his son, Ronald and wife, Tootie, of Lake Texoma;
grandson, Ky Smith and wife, Jodie, of Mustang; granddaughter, Ronda
Mandrell and husband, Jerry, of Grand Prairie, Texas; great-grandchildren, Mandy
and Kylee Smith and Dior Paxton and Preston Mandrell; sister-in-law, Fern
Smith of Tulsa; sisters and brothers-in-law, Zell and Jakie Kelman of Lawton and
Esther and J.B. Henderson of Waurika; and many nieces and nephews.
