Wilma English Vaughan died Thursday, Oct. 23, at Brookhaven
Extended Care in Norman. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m.
today at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Norman.
Mrs. Vaughan was born April 6, 1912, on a farm near Nowatta,
the sixth of eight children born to Roy and Rose English. She
attended schools in Lima, Ohio, Nowatta and Tecumseh. She
graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1929. She earned a
teacher's certificate from Central State Teacher's College in Ada
and taught in the Tecumseh school system. She later earned a
B.S. degree from the University of Oklahoma.
Mrs. Vaughan married Floyd Vaughan in June 1936. Mr. Vaughan
was a professor at the OU College of Business Administration.
They had three children, Robert, John (Jack) and Virginia. Mrs.
Vaughan's family said her sense of self-reliance served her well
following her husband's death in 1955. Mr. Vaughan taught in Norman
public schools while raising her children. Mrs. Vaughan saw each of
her children graduate from OU. She then taught for the Army in
Germany for one year. She returned to Norman after her first two
grandchildren were born in 1962. She taught in Norman until she
retired in 1974. Her teaching assignments included McKinley,
Washington, Jackson and Jefferson schools.
Mrs. Vaughan was a charter member of Memorial Presbyterian
Church in Norman. SHe served as a Deacon, Elder, Clerk of the
Session and as a member of many committees. She participated
in volunteer activities in the community, including taping magazine
articles for use on The League for the Blind radio broadcasts. Mrs.
Vaughan, her husband and their children lived in England in 1949-
50, while Mr. Vaughan taught at the London School of Economics
and researched the British Parent System. Mrs. Vaughan was
able to return to England many times and also traveled extensively
in other parts of the world. Her travels included numerous trips to
see her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She enjoyed many visits with her family and friends at home
in Norman, and for the past six years as a member of the
Rivermont Retirement Community. Mrs. Vaughan's family said that
she was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and
friend to many. Mrs. Vaughan's family said that her children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a great source of
pleasure and pride.
Mrs. Vaughan was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; son,
Robert; and step-daughter, Margaret.
Mrs. Vaughan is survived by her son Jack and wife, Kay, of Norman;
daughter Virginia and husband, Edward Mills, of Austin, Texas;
sister, Ruth Tennyson of Shawnee; grandchildren, Mary Vaughan
Hibbard and husband, Stephen, of San Francisco, Robert Vaughan Jr.
of Atlanta, Ga., Richard Vaughan and his wife, Jennifer, of Kansas
City, Mo., and Jennifer Hutchinson of Norman; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial conmtributions may be made to Memorial Presbyterian
Church or the Oklahoma League for the Blind.
