Terry was the first girl I asked to go steady. I asked my parents for an initial ring for my 12th birthday, which they were good enough to buy for me. It was 6th grade at the Jackson Elementary annex. I had decided to give Terry the ring at our morning recess, and my heart was pounding as the time drew near. I was scared to death! The bell rang and we all headed outdoors. As several of us guys were running out to play ball, I asked Terry if she would hold my stuff for me. I gave her several items and then I took off the ring and handed it to her, as well. As I ran off, I hollered back, “Thanks, and you can keep the ring!” By the time recess was over, she had already taped the ring so it would fit her finger and she was wearing it! I was very glad to see she had forgiven me for being such a coward. I will always remember Terry as my first steady girlfriend.
